The CNAM itself is both a museum dedicated to technological innovation and an academic institution. Founded in 1794 by Henri Grégoire, the Musée des Arts et Métiers was refurbished in 2000, and now exhibits over 2,400 inventions. They are split into seven collections Scientific instruments, Materials, Energy, Mechanics, Construction, Communication and Transport.
CNAM is a higher education institution specialized in continuing education. With nearly 400 teaching researchers, the institution nurtures major research initiatives with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity. The teaching staff brings together university professors and industry professionals, and most programs are available through evening and/or Saturday courses. CNAM is located in a former monastery, and offers an attractive mix of modern equipment and ancient rooms and building.
Transportation
Paris enjoys an excellent urban transport network. The parisian Metro consists of 300 stations on 16 lines covering the 10x10km area of central Paris. These are complemented by 5 express train lines (RER) connecting Paris city centre to surrounding suburbs, in particular to the airports; these can also be used to shorten a trip from one end of the city to another. A few dozen bus lines complete the urban transportation system; in recent years, bus corridors have been created across most of the town, making buses (much) faster.
